A laptop screen extender adds one, two or three extra screens around the laptop you already own. Here's how they work, who they suit, and what to check before you buy.

VueXtend Tri 16 inch laptop screen extender with two side screens

A laptop screen extender is a set of slim, portable screens that sits around your laptop and turns it into a two, three or four-screen workstation. You keep the laptop you already own, plug in a cable, and get the screen space of a desk setup wherever you work: at home, in the office, on a hot desk or in a hotel room.

In short

  • What it is: one, two or three extra screens in a single fold-out frame that stands behind your laptop.
  • How it connects: usually one or two USB-C cables. Your computer sees each screen as an extra monitor.
  • Who it suits: anyone who juggles lots of windows or works away from a fixed desk.
  • Before you buy: check your laptop's size, its ports, and (on a Mac) its chip.

How does a laptop screen extender work?

Most laptop screen extenders are a frame with one or more fold-out screens. VueXtend models stand on a built-in kickstand or back stand on the desk behind your laptop, with the extra screens opening out to the left and right (and, on Quad models, above).

Nothing touches your laptop. No clips, clamps or sticky pads: the extender stands on its own, so your laptop lid stays scratch-free.

The screens connect to your laptop with USB-C, which carries both the picture and the power on most modern laptops. Some models also have a Mini HDMI input, and models that run three screens from one cable use a small display driver. Your computer then treats each screen as an extra monitor, so you can drag windows across, extend your desktop or mirror your display.

What can you do with extra screens?

At work

  • Remote and hybrid work: email, Teams or Slack and your main document open at once.
  • Office hot desking: a full multi-screen setup in one bag.
  • Coding and data: code, docs and a live preview side by side.
  • Presenting: Tri side screens rotate 360 degrees to face a client.

Beyond the office

  • Design and photo editing: canvas on the laptop, tools on the sides.
  • Trading and dashboards: several charts or feeds at once.
  • Studying: lecture, notes and research on separate screens.
  • Travel: a proper workstation in a hotel room.

Laptop screen extender vs portable monitor vs desk monitor

All three add screen space, but they suit different ways of working.

Laptop screen extender Portable monitor Desk monitor
Extra screens 1 to 3 in one frame 1 1 per monitor
Portable Yes, one bag Yes No
Setup Under a minute Quick Fixed at one desk
Best for Hybrid work, travel, multitasking Occasional second screen One permanent desk

If you mostly work at one desk, a desk monitor is hard to beat. If you move between home, office and travel, or need more than one extra screen, a laptop screen extender is usually the better fit.

Types of laptop screen extender

What to check before you buy

  1. Your laptop's screen sizeA 14 inch laptop screen extender suits 12 to 15 inch laptops best, and a 16 inch extender suits 15 to 18.5 inch laptops. Our guide to 14 vs 16 inch extenders goes into more detail.
  2. Your portsCheck your laptop has a full-function USB-C port (often marked with a DisplayPort or Thunderbolt symbol) that carries video. Tri models connect each side screen with its own USB-C cable on a Mac, so count your ports. Models that use a display driver can run several screens from one USB-C or USB-A connection.
  3. Full HD or 2.5K QHDFull HD (1920x1080 or 1920x1200) is sharp and fine for most office work. 2.5K QHD (2560x1600) gives crisper text and more room on screen, which helps with design, photo editing and long days of reading. Browse our 2.5K QHD laptop screen extenders to compare.
  4. Mac or WindowsWindows laptops can usually run two or more extra screens without extra software. MacBooks with base M1, M2 and M3 chips can only drive one external display on their own, so they need a model with a display driver to run more. Our MacBook screen extender page explains which model suits each chip.
  5. Weight and setupA Tri 14 inch model weighs about 1.6 kg and is the easiest to carry every day. An 18.5 inch Quad weighs about 4 kg and is best for a desk you return to.

Is a laptop screen extender worth it?

If you regularly juggle more than two windows, or work away from a fixed desk, extra screen space saves a lot of switching between tabs and apps.

A laptop screen extender gives you a multi-screen setup without being tied to one desk. Every VueXtend order includes free UK delivery, 30-day returns and a 12-month warranty, so you can try it at your own desk.

Quick answers

Does a laptop screen extender damage the laptop?

No. VueXtend extenders stand on their own stand behind the laptop, so nothing attaches to the lid.

Do I need a power adapter?

Most models run from your laptop's USB-C port. Quad models include a 30W USB-C power supply to keep three screens bright and stable.

Can I use it with a tablet or phone?

Some models also list Android phones, Nintendo Switch and games consoles as compatible when they output video over USB-C. Check the compatible systems on each product page before you buy.

Can you help me choose?

Yes. Tell us your laptop model and our UK team will recommend the right VueXtend.
